Casey Anthony Acquittal May Spur New State Law
In outrage over the acquittal of Casey Anthony in the 2008 murder of her two year old daughter, lawmakers in Connecticut are making plans for a new law. The legislation will be called "Caylee's Law" and is set to be introduced at the next legislative session. The legislation will enforce stricter laws against parents who take too long to report a missing child. At the time Ms. Casey finally reported the disappearance of her daughter to authorities, two year old Caylee had been missing for 31 days. Connecticut state representatives say this is "simply unacceptable." If passed, parents or caretakers of a child would be charged with a felony if the disappearance wasn't reported within 24 hours.
Lawmakers also plan to try to enstate a felony charge for anyone that makes false statements to law enforcement officials about a child's disappearance. Every minute counts when a child disappears and false statements only serve to hinder the search. They even want to require parents and caretakers to prove that they were trying to find the child during that 24 hour time limit.
Several State Representatives including Susan Johnson and Mae Flexer are pursuing the new legislation. Flexer told the press that she has gotten over 500 phone calls and emails from concerned citizens that are appalled by the recent verdict. She said that they are questioning why there aren't laws in place to address this issue.
